I am a trusted adviser with more than twenty years’ experience as a specialist in legal recruitment. My practice spans the London, UK and international markets and throughout my career I have worked on a wide range of roles for law firms and a variety of companies, financial institutions and major organisations.
I have developed a specialist practice in placing General Counsel, COLPs and other risk and compliance experts into law firms and have worked on retained assignments in this area for several national and international firms.
I undertake partner recruitment for law firms and have strong working relationships with a variety of firms in the London and national market. I also place lawyers into in-house legal teams, particularly at General Counsel, Head of Legal, Legal Director and Senior Legal Counsel level.
Born in Canada, I have dual nationality and have been living in the UK for over forty years. I qualified as lawyer in 1992 with Cameron Markby Hewitt (now CMS Cameron Mckenna Nabarro Olswang), where I specialised in banking and insurance litigation. I began my recruitment career with a market leading legal recruitment company, where I became a director, and was one of the founding directors of First Counsel. Before setting up Cayley Coughtrie I was a Managing Director at a large international recruitment business.

I am a law firm partner recruitment specialist and have been operating in the London legal market since 2005. My practice is a mixture of retained headhunting and search, and candidate led contingent introductions, and I almost exclusively work in London and the surrounding areas.
My client base is varied. I work closely with many of the leading national and international practices, established West End stalwarts and some US firms.
I also have very close relationships with many of the smaller, boutique, specialist and lesser known law firms in Central London. As an owner of a boutique company myself I understand the unique opportunities and challenges open to smaller businesses and with plenty of experience in this market am well placed to assist such firms with their growth.
I work with partners from large and small firms, and across practice areas. I also place Legal Director level candidates into partner/partner track roles and very much enjoy advising candidates at this crucial stage in their career.
I grew up in Dundee and am a law graduate from the London School of Economics. I have developed my career since 2005 in well regarded City legal recruitment businesses and have managed teams of successful consultants from a relatively young age. Before setting up Cayley Coughtrie in 2016 I was a Director at a large international recruitment business.

I am a trusted adviser with over 15 years’ experience as a specialist legal recruiter in the private practice law firm market. My focus is on the lateral recruitment of Partners into law firms in London and other major financial centres in the UK.
My clients include UK, US and boutique firms and other legal service providers. Working across a range of commercial disciplines, I have a depth of experience in both contingent recruitment and bespoke, retained search exercises on behalf of law firm clients who are seeking strategic lateral partner hires. I started my legal recruitment career in 2003 and have held senior positions at highly regarded legal recruitment firms.
Prior to recruitment, I qualified as a lawyer in 1997 and worked in the corporate department at Eversheds in London and then in-house at Numis Securities, on ECM and corporate finance transactions.

I am a passionate and dedicated legal recruitment specialist with over 15 years’ experience. I have gained extensive expertise during my career recruiting for corporates, financial institutions and, in recent years, organisations within the alternative legal market.
In the In-house market I am proud to have worked on roles from NQ to General Counsel and on instructions from first or sole counsel through to building teams. I pride myself that many of the candidates I have recruited have remained in their roles for many years enjoying rewarding and successful careers.
With the advent of “New Law” and the alternative legal market I switched my focus to interim legal solutions and the consultancy market. In 2015 I joined the management team at a pioneering law firm within the ALSP space. I spent the next four years recruiting and managing consultant lawyers for the platform. With this unique insight into the psyche of lawyers seeking a different career path in law I have continued to work closely with clients and candidates to identify the best career and resourcing options available in this entrepreneurial arena.
Prior to commencing legal recruitment in 2004 I had trained and qualified as a solicitor in the City of London. After training with Rowe & Maw (subsequently merged into Mayer Brown,) I joined the Corporate Finance team on qualification working with businesses listing on AIM. After a couple of years’ private practice experience, I moved in-house to the corporate counsel legal team at Lehman Brothers Bank to handle commercial transactions. My years as a solicitor have given me an excellent foundation of knowledge and understanding on which to build my recruitment career.
